I started running TAB boards in York in 2009. My original motivation for starting the TAB business was that I had worked with large corporates and private business owners throughout my career, and I loved the pace and challenge in SMEs. So much so that I wanted to run one myself, and work with other owners as a core component of what I do every day.
I have tremendous respect for what SME owners and MD’s do.
I also observed that most business owners could benefit from some really good third party advice. I had seen the value that Boards of Directors provide to larger businesses and believed that smaller businesses would also benefit substantially from objective advice. While consultants, family members and employees can provide a useful sounding board, only business owners can truly appreciate what other business owners are going through.
When I learned about TAB Boards and the model of establishing Business Owner Advisory Boards, I thought this would be a great service for private business owners. I also believe that TAB provides a model where I could leverage the experience that I have accumulated over my career and the passion that I have for SMEs, to make a real difference in the companies and the lives of business owners. It felt like the perfect fit.
Now that I have been operating TAB Boards for years, I can’t imagine doing anything else.
As a team, we are now running 6 local boards with 40 members in the York area. Our members include the full spectrum of business areas, including manufacturing, construction, retail and professional services. Our board members have a combined 800 years of experience running businesses. They have bonded with each other at a very profound level and have derived tremendous value from being part of a TAB Board.
